Had some free time to replace the clutch hydraulics and give the ‘94 a light detail. Still surprises me how decent the paint is after 200k miles. There is some light swirl scratches all over, but she looks great outside of about 5 feet. What is there should clean up pretty well with a bit of polish.

Finally got a chance to take it out for a hard drive too, It was really surprising how much stiffer a hard top makes a M iata feel.

Looks great! H ardtop makes a big difference. Wasn’t your other Miata an earlier year model? The chassis stiffening got better as well in the later models. F or me since putting in a roll bar, it’s not really noticeable anymore when the hard top is removed.

The other car is a 93, but I’ve swapped over to a 95 (rear ) subframe in preparation for a 1.8 swap, so it has all the same under bracing bracing minus the front cross beam. It does have a roll bar, but the new car definitely still feels stiffer.

Got ya. Makes sense a s i t certainly looks to be in much better shape! Are you goin to swap over parts from your old Miata?

Only thing really worth swapping is the roll bar, whichever car I take to Laguna in October will have to have one. Aside from that, I’m perfectly happy keeping the blue one stock (maybe some coilovers depending on how much the stock shocks annoy me). I’ll probably swap in some similar Jeep LED headlights too, the 90's bulbs just don’t do it in terms of light output.

Oh ok you plan to keep the old one. Cool. Yeah the sealed beam halogens are ok, but I like the cibie h4s I have now much more. Some one told me they have the brightness of  a dying sun lol

Yeah, planning on keeping both, insurance is pretty cheap and registration is a one time only permanent deal (both are going to be on classic plates) so the only thing they really cost me is space.

Having a nice stock example, lets me potentially take red down a lot longer and do some more time consuming work (ie. cross platform motor swap/turbo/etc..)

I’ll check out the cibies too, but I’ve been really impressed with the Chinese full LEDs on red.

Ah yeah not having to worry about messing anything up is reason enough to keep her as a project car. I definitely want a car I could just have around to work on in my own sweet time. First though I think I should purchase a home or at least rent a place with a garage to keep it in!

What I like about the cibies is while they won’t have the same super even light output as leds they are much brighter and look oem (for me that matters). I have seen h4 led bulbs which I have been curious about, not sure if they are worth it.

I ’ve also  been curious about classic plates. What are the benefits?

Classic plates are great depending on your usage. It varies state to state, but here in Oregon it means the following

One time registration fee ($100)

No inspection

No emissions

No front plate

On the other hand, you can’t use a classic plated car as your daily, usage is limited to “shows and events”, it’s not very strictly enforced, but if you get pulled over and answer ”I’ m driving to work” you might get some heat.

For me this works out great because I daily drive a motorcycle.

I’ll have to look into it here in NC I guess. I didn’t know about the mileage limits, but t hats pretty worth it if they don’t check on it.
